Subject: Farming for insurance

Kansas
I would love to be able to make an honest living farming. That is one reason why I have stayed conservative- kept growing things we can grow like wheat and milo instead of risky dryland corn. Unfortunately, circumstances (the weather) doesn't even allow for that anymore. Out of the last 5 summers, we got rain one summer and that came with enough hail and wind to offset all the benefits of the rain. At this point, I see no way to make a living other than low inputs, and milk the insurance and government payments for all we can. Again, not an ideal way to make a living but that's the place we've been put in. Yes, I'm whining, but I haven't said anything that's not true.
