I don’t believe things are as bad as some folks think… sure we don’t have $7 corn.
I’ve never seen so may adds looking for ground in my life and the per acre rent is just stupid money…
Watch the discussion on here and facebook… a lot of people are buying new equipment(even new to them), putting up bins and sheds… buying land. Forgive me if I’m wrong but typically if money is tight you aren’t buying new things or spending money.
Sure things aren’t as great as they have been but I honestly don’t believe the whole farming community is going broke… that’s coming from someone who takes zero payments from the government… I can’t imagine the money I would have if I did accept payments.
I can see the public’s point of view why they think the farmer is being greedy… we are worth millions… drive for the most part nicer vehicles then the average joe and are running equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to even a million dollars. The average person can’t comprehend that as a business expense that you don’t actually have that cash.
I have been around the Midwest and out west. You see a lot of the small towns folks don’t have much but you drive into the countryside you have folks who are worth millions and don’t necessarily have to worry about it day to day bills.
Yes I’ve have this rant multiple times and told I’m wrong but I think it’s good food for thought
I should add when conversations come up with non farming folks I do try to advocate that it’s not as easy as it looks. I’ve even gotten so deep into some discussions I told them to go to the bank get a few million invest and let me know how it goes. Just because we pull in big dollars doesn’t mean we have big dollars
