WCIL | We were self insured forever and just recently started carrying some minimal insurance since inputs have skyrocketed the past few years. Haven't changed how we farm one iota. Not sure what we would do different with or without it. Maybe the guys who farm in the tougher fringe areas would change their plans. Have done a lot of tiling and some irrigation to mitigate some weather risk. Insurance for us is indeed a backstop but that's what all insurance is. To keep you solvent and lower exposure. At least that's how we use it.
And don't be so sure premiums wouldn't go down without subsidies. It sure did on our health insurance when we purchased non ACA coverage. A fraction of the deductible, bigger network and lower premium. Gov is not the answer. | |
