northeastern Ohio | My mom had a collection of vinyl albums that I played as a kid: Beatles, Archies, Simon/Garfunkal, ect.
The first album that I bought was Kenny Rogers. I played it so much that my younger brother got mad and scratched it so I wouldn't play it anymore!
Then I bought one of those albums that they advertised on TV that featured a bunch of popular songs. Summer Jam 3 (1981)! I wanted it because it had Elvira (Oak Ridge Boys). I didn't realize it at the time, but it was not the original artists.
The same year, I got a stereo for Christmas that had an 8 track player. The only 8 track we had was Rod Stewart (yuck). But dad bought an adapter so that I could play cassettes, but we didn't have any of those either. So I bought come blank 8 track tapes and made my own mix tapes recorded off of the radio. Had to listen to Kasey Kasem on Sunday morning to record my mix for the week! It was weird to have songs split in half when the tape would go to the next track.
Finally bought a Walkman when I went to college and signed up for the 10 cassettes for a penny club! There was a used record store in Columbus and I would look for deals there too.
