North Central Indiana | That’s an incredibly generalized statement missing all the context. My first question is simple. Are farms consolidated because people leave or do people leave because farms are consolidated? What’s the real chances of a guy having a good enough off farm job that he can afford to farm part time? Other industries in the area to support people or is it BFE and the only thing they’ve ever done there is farm and run an elevator? Proximity to larger metro areas? Access to healthcare and amenities? All of these things matter. In reality people leave small towns for a large number of reasons, the vast majority having nothing to do with farming. And are we talking about a guy that “wants to farm because it looks fun” or a guy that has some knowledge and skills for the career? Not saying it’s limited as to who can do it but it’s also a business and not everyone can run a coffee shop or tech company or construction company or lots of other things | |
