Iowa | Comfortable following distance seems to be subjective. What one person doesn't think twice about can be very uncomfortable to another. What makes sense on a crowded road seems a bit odd elsewhere. Like you say, not every tailgater is using adaptive cruise. It just seems to be happening a lot more during the last few years out in the wide open spaces with plenty of opportunity to pass or back off, but they just stay consistently close behind for miles and miles.... Sometimes I pull over and stop so they will pass by, especially if their headlights are causing visibility issues. It's not that I'm crawling along 5 mph under the speed limit. Driving too much over the speed limit seems to result in a conversation with law enforcement, and I try to avoid that on the road.
