Rustywire - I enjoyed reading your post. I remember those days. We had six kids at home, and I remember cutting logs on a Friday so we could grocery shop before the weekend. My wife carried a little calculator for the same reason, and that was while shopping at the scratch and dent salvage/bulk Amish store! 50 pound bags of oatmeal made for cheap breakfast.
My wife says the reason we appreciate things in our marriage is that we had tough times to compare them to.
