Subject: RE: food desert

Mid Michigan
Getting around a city can be a miserable situation. Having a place to park a car is difficult and even using it is almost impossible. Population densities are high. I can easily see how there are food deserts. The dollar general model would probably work pretty well for most of them if they would get some fresh vegetables, potatos and fresh fruit in them. I go to most towns around here are less than 15,000 population and they all have a Kroger, Walmart super centers, Meijers, and several smaller grocery stores and many, many dollar stores and pharmacy stores that sell food products. The extremely highly populated cities usually don't have those stores until you get many miles outside the population density. Maybe Kroger or Walmart could set up a "Hub" of some sort in downtown areas where you could order your groceries to be brought to the "Hub" at a certain time of the day and you walk there and pick them up. Lots of ways to deal with it without building an entire store. Almost like curbside pickup that they already offer. This story reminded me of how my girlfriend used to drive 50 miles to work from the country to city. Her sister used to live in the city and drove 7 miles. They both left at the same time to get to work the same time. So yeah, it's not easy to get around in a big city. Even if you have a car.
