Subject: RE: food desert

Western Oregon
We are 10 miles from the county seat with a Safeway and regional Walmart. Designated food desert. Little town has it's own school district. Very poor, end of road and a big trailer park. Was small RV park but taken over by 60-70 "trailers" with very little added infrastructure. It is on city sewer and water. We have a little 7star convenience store/gas station/ fried chicken place in town, of 300.

A group of us started a Friday produce giveaway 15 years ago when I retired and moved back to the area. At the church in town. My side of my road is county. First time I lived here my homestead was in the city limits on 19 acres. My farm was just outside the city limits, same deal, just across the road.. Some bread/chips and limited dairy along with produce. We picked up on Friday morning for the 5-6 pm giveaway. Started by getting what was left at end of week so coolers were empty for their Monday morning deliveries. Part of the Polk/Marion food bank. Any one is welcome, it has grown over the years. Because of rules about temperatures, they now deliver to our coolers. More than 15 miles limit. We also have a food bank in town at the other church, use to be only canned and staples. It was once a month. Now it has the same refrigerated deliveries on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, giveaway on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. We have 2 coolers and 2 freezers, one meat and 1 frozen fruit and vegetables. I help unload and help with distribution when needed....James
