I consider them more conveniences tan safety features. Like you said, they enable the driver to pay less attention. Driving a vehicle made in the last 40 years doesnt require much ability or attention, unlike an old model T where you had to manually adjust timing and shift gears. I think someone once said that the greatest safety device we could put in cars would be a big spike from the center of every steering wheel.
