You made a lot of good points as did many others. When one considers the various numbers of generations, the various types of farms, the various areas, the various personalities involved, etc, etc it is actually extremely complicated and everyone needs to sort through their own situation to decide what applies and what doesn’t in their own situation.

On the note of government support I will comment because it comes up here often and is often used as an insult. If a person were to be honest every government worker is essentially being “subsidized” by the non government workers because ultimately that is where their pay check is coming from.

I don’t mean that as an insult to government workers any more than people mean it as an insult to farmers. It could be argued that the government is providing a service that is needed just like one could argue that farmers are providing goods that are needed. Farmer subsidies are paid for by the general public just like government salaries are.

People view subsidies different than a government wage but the reality is that it is other people that are paying for them both.
