Unless you have really complicated excel formulas, I would go to LibreOffice or Google has it suite. LO will read and write the .docx and xcel formats.
Word and Xcel are a little easier and more sophisticated than LO. One example is the print page in xcel is easier to modify than LO but I make it work. LO is free and regularly gets updated. I have never used the Google suite.
