| I recommend trying to get away from Microsoft in general by switching to Linux. Fedora is a good beginner friendly distro.
But if you dont want to make the jump a good office alternative is LibreOffice. A windows version is available and has good compatibility with existing excel files. Best part is its free/open source. You'll want the Windows x86-64 version.
As for a PDF viewer, you can set PDFs to open in chrome/firefox.(This is in the windows settings) They have basic edit features. Highlight etc. Adobe is bloated and most people don't use a majority of the features. (LibreOffice Draw is alternative for advanced features)
