Being able to afford something and being able to get a roi is a huge difference. 800 acres with modern equipment is going to have a pretty high cost per acre.
In my situation, the equipment is typically used up when I buy it. Therefore it never depreciates much further. It's the only way this poor boy competes. Of course by competing, there's a lot of wrenching going on, hours spent without A/C, and not always the greatest creature comforts surrounding you. But that's been my life I reckon. Hasn't been all that bad. Pretty good actually. At 60 years old I haven't had a boss in over 3 decades.
