Yes, it is true that a missing tooth is a broken mouth. A least that is what I was taught. A middle aged cow can lose a tooth, especially cows in the sand hills.

Broken mouth is not a fatal condition. Give the cow 6-12 months of easy eating, her mouth toughens up and she is good for several years. The rub is the 6-12 months of easy life. Most producers prefer to invest that into a young heifer.

Some of this behavior is like picking perfect apples at the grocery. Any flaw and they are discarded. However with cows, I know some folks find a way yield value from sellers throw-aways.
