| I’ll concede both of your points. Radical Muslims have been radical for a long long time and what would I do if I were king since we live in the real world and it’s a real problem for world security regardless of who caused the problem.
The honest answer is I don’t know.
I’m under the impression that 80% or so of Iranians are not hardliners like their leadership was before Trump killed some of the leadership.
If he had succeeded in enabling a transition to a leadership that looks more like the 80% then we would all be cheering now, regardless of the past.
Instead we killed 200 school kids (almost certainly creating a whole new generation of radicals my kids and grandkids will have to deal with) and got the last guys son in there as the leader who is even worse than his Dad was.
It’s easy for me to say this is a disaster hindsight being 20/20 when it could have been something amazing for the world.
I don’t think I would have gone in there if I were king. Like Boon said, I’m not convinced that a nuclear Iran would have spelled out doom for the world or for us. I’m also unconvinced that fear of a nuclear Iran spelling doom for the world is an adequate reason to create another generation of extremists (I know he wasn’t trying to hit a strangely positioned school but it happened and the consequences will be long lasting).
Now that we have a new generation of extremists that have been cemented by the last month or so? I don’t know. Maybe we need to keep going to the bitter end. | |
