If USA born calves had been fed and processed in the USA instead of importing cheap calves from Mexico, then likely there wouldn't be very much of a shortage of cattle due to the screw worm. The cow/calf producers could have been in the position to produce calves for the US market if they could make decent money at it. They have had a couple years of good prices recently, but the decade before was not so good. Everyone has got to make a little money to operate.
