So you want 2 stunted calves? No way would I take milk from another calf. Put him in a pen and FEED him. Milk til he's on feed and then dry feed and hay after that.

I don't understand how you would get a stunted calf?

Our cows are on grass they are leaking milk. They are fat high body score, There's no such thing as a stunted calf. We have a program that works to keep the calf with the herd. Long story short you keep taking bottles out there to supplement the calf until it no longer wants you. When it stops taking off the bottle then it's acclimated with the herd and you just let it be.

Any metric that we want to use cost per day, rate of gain per day, body condition, overall health. The times we have taken a calf to the feedlot to make a bottle calf out of it is light years behind the calf that stayed with the herd.

$1,000 to get rid of a calf that could be an inconvenience for you absolutely why would you not just take that money and run laughing all the way to the bank.

In my system my cost to get from that newborn calf to a $2,500 calf in the fall is so little. I will take that calf to the fall 100% of the time and capture that extra $1,500.
