NW Wisconsin
I have 25 to calve here starting soon. What ive figured out is slow and steady wins the race. Started with 2 head when I was 14. And have worked my way up from there. Facilites are expensive. Fencing is expensive. Need to have the facilities for the animals before you get them. A corral for 5-10 head works but run 40 though it and you will wish you didnt have the extra cows. BTDT. Current prices are rewarding the guys that have the cows and kept them. I certainly wouldn't want to over extend right now with where interest rates are. Im 26 now and yeah would it be nice to have 40 head 2 years ago sure but really wouldnt want it any other way than how I did it. Learned a lot and didnt have big capital investments until recently to support the animals.

15 head will turn into 30-40 in a few years. Are you going to miss the big prices? Sure but you have very little risk in just saying course.

Few short years ago I just had the small group of cows. Added some non bred heifers culled the ones that didnt make the cut. But though all of it the first cows that I bought over 12 years ago are still around. From nothing but a dirt pasture to the big lights in the shed for the replacements and steers.
