E.Central MN | Shortly after those days of long lines at the gas stations, the govt offered subsidies to spur private investment into the ethanol industry for use as a fuel supplement. There already were companies that produced alcohol for non-fuel markets(ADM/etc). When Reagan took office, he eliminated the alternative energy subsidies that effectively ended the ethanol business at that time. Later when the oil industry began to face govt scrutiny for oil spills and the threat of lawsuits for the use of MTBE, they agreed to the deal which mandated a small percent of ethanol be blended with the nation's gasoline supply. | |
