Subject: RE: Educate me on ethanol

Thank you. By the mid 1990s, barley and oats were on their way out the door as being reliable crops to grow here. Not just because of economics but because of changing weather conditions. Corn and soybeans filled that void. Not to mention, half of my immediate area was in CRP. That did more to damage the rural economy than what people think ethanol and modern crop insurance have done. If things hadn't changed by the mid 2000s, this area would still be mostly CRP and even less of a population than we have now.

Have we been putting the cart before the horse when it comes to corn and soybean production in this country? I think there's no denying that we have. But as far as other grains are concerned, they're really the only ones we have readily available and mostly reliable production and end product usage of. I'd much rather grow wheat because i think it's the best product we have that actually goes into human consumable food in this country for grains. But, at this point we can't raise it economically and have a quality product in a lot of areas at least here in HRSW country because of the same weather and quality problems that moved barley and oat acres to corn and beans in the 90s.
