Western Ohio | Take the bottle calf and hurry up is my approach.
Get calf hungry. So feed him in the morning then put him on the cow that night. We just save time and put the cow in the chute and bring calf to the chute morning and night. My experience is it will take 3 days morning and night. If cow wants a calf and calf will hustle might get it done in a day and a half.
When you are going out to feed the calf go in slow and see if you can catch it nursing during those 3 days. As soon as I catch it nursing, I back out and leave them penned for 2 more days to ensure they latch and bond. Needs to be a really good cow to go through the effort is my opinion particularly if you are paying 1500 for a calf just to keep a cow around.
