I guess that is my question, without knowing all the terms.
Why can’t they just direct deposit it, why do I need all this iDme junk?
Paul
I'm going to go out on a limb and say, MAYBE everyone is talking about two different things.
One is direct deposit of a REFUND from the fed; the routing numbers and account numbers can be set up by your CPA/accountant.
Two is PAYMENTS to the fed, this has to be done, and each payment set up by you. You can log into the IRS site via one of two ways (I used ID.me, I don't remember the name of the other one unfortunately). ID.me also works for signing into the SS site now.
The reason for ID.me (or equivalent) is as of September 30, 2026, the Fed will no longer except checks/money orders/etc. for quarterly or what most call a 941 payment (employee withholding/FICA payments). This was cost cutting move (Executive Order) by Trump., seems paper checks were 16 times more likely to be forged/stolen.
As a side note/public service announcement, effective January 1, 2026 the post office is no longer postmarking letters the day they pick them up (think of mailing return/payment April 15th, June 15th, September 15th and January 15th), but instead the mail will be post marked the day it gets processed at the regional postage center. Which could make your return/payment late this year and going forward. I've signed up for ACH payment to the IRS (number two above), if you set this up for April 15th, that will be the day payment is 'pulled' and will be considered paid by due date by the IRS.
