Iowa
-Interesting stories above. Shortly after I learned to walk, I was climbing up the back of a chair. The chair tipped over with my leg caught between the bars on the back rest. I don't remember that, but my leg was broken. I do remember getting the cast cut off. The doctor had some sort of electric saw and was cutting too deep. Mom was there. I was screaming. No one took me seriously. I still have the scar. That was a sign of things to come. I have other memories of the early years. Most of them were not good memories. I was often told there was nothing wrong. Many years later I can look back and see otherwise. To this day, it always amazes me how some people can look me in the eye and lecture me about how things were when they were not there to experience it for themselves.

There were a few good memories as well, or at least they seemed real at the time. I'd like to go back and relive some of those, but one cannot cross that same river twice. The river changes over time, and so do we. Those good memories are sort of a curse and yet a blessing. They can leave you endlessly longing for more, but life would have been empty without them. The bad memories are also a curse and a blessing. They can lead to a lot of bitterness if you let them, but also a measure of satisfaction having survived and some appreciation of the good stuff beyond blissful ignorance. One does not survive by pouting about what is wrong, although there was a fair amount of that. One survives by focusing on what needs to be done and making it happen, perhaps some good luck, and the grace of God.

I'll add one story about a teacher. I did not look forward to seeing most of my K-12 teachers, but there were a couple that I liked. My first grade teacher was probably in her first or second year of teaching. She had us draw a picture with our crayons. I drew a picture of her wearing her blue dress. I simply drew what I saw. It was a pretty good drawing with all the right curves in all the right places. She gave it to my mom at teacher's conference. Teacher's conferences were seldom a good thing. This teacher was always kind and treated me well, but mom was not happy about my drawing...
