His post made me wonder.

I think I remember almost everything I did from my adult youth (I'm 75 now).

But, how many really early memories do you have?

My wife and female cousin have all talked about this, and the ladies claim to remember things way farther back than I do.

I was about fourth or fifth grade before I remember much detail about things (9-10 years old)...............both the ladies claim to remember things from around age three. One remembers the floor plan of a house they moved from when she was 4.

I have flashes and some memories from fifth grade, but no memories at all of first grade. If my first-grade teacher knocked on my door, I would not recognize her.

When do your memories start?

Memories are cemented by spikes in adrenaline, that’s why everyone remembers when something traumatic happens. Also some people confuse recollection from pictures and stories as memories, so there are a few different factors that’ll affect what and how people remember.

My earliest memory that isn’t memorized in photos or retold to me as a story is from when we went to see my mom at the hospital when my little sister was born. Everyone tells about how I was more interested in the pipes under the sink than the new baby, but I don’t remember that at all. The part I remember was when we arrived, in the parking lot my grandmother gave each of us a flower to give to my mom. Like little kids do, I held mine with both hands by the bottom of the stem with the flower drooping forward in front of me. The hospital had a powered rotating door, and as we walked up to it, I hesitated and one of the door panels came around and neatly plucked the head off of the flower. When we got up to the room I gave my mom the bare stem. I was 2 years 5 months old, but I know it’s a true memory because there were no pictures and nobody ever retold that story until I was a teenager and I told it myself. My mom laughed because she remembered getting a bare stem, but until then she didn’t know why.
