S Illinois | Don’t over embellish what the past was. Your forefathers didn’t do that for some great environmental symbiosis, rather they did that because it’s all they had. They had to use whatever fertilizer was economically available. Animal ag paid the bills as bulk grain was expensive to move compared to the dollars received. Moving grain off the farm via animals was both more efficient and profitable. It’s also allowed for the spreading of risk. Unlikely to see all sectors fail in the same year.
It’s hard to do now, but it would have been very interesting to hear what those who lived in prior generations would have done if open to the same technological advances we have today. | |
