Might be worth double checking that the new roller you have is the correct part number for your application, and/or that it's not a manufacturing defect with something bent wrong. We've run SCH on JD platforms for years and new style interchanged fine for us.
My understanding is they switched because the old style tying two guards together reduces how much cutterbar can flex.
