| Good point on the damages.
He’s a volunteer firefighter. There’s no loss of income. He’s older and wasn’t going to pursue a career, so there’s no future income loss.
Other than ego, where’s the harm?

Who steals my purse steals trash; tis something, nothing;
Twas mine, tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him
And makes me poor indeed.”
It certain he can prove loss of a good name let alone any value to it.
As I said in an earlier post; they will uncover all sorts of dirt to defend and prove no libel. Truth is the best defense in such matters.
Obviously Tommy’s department thought there was some harm to them if they called him out on it.
