Marshfield, WI | I took NRCS cost sharing to close a small earthen lagoon 2 years ago. Here in Wisconsin, the county usually issues the permit (for a fee) as they have the ordinances. They usually partner with NRCS for funding as they have a bigger piggy bank. I had 5' of solids from 30 years on the far side. Tried a prop when we pumped several years of water out but it only would make a hole the size of a pickup bed so decided to haul solids out since we needed a backhoe anyway to remove any stained soil. I rented a big Artex spreader and my contractor had a good sized backhoe that would reach 50% of the solids from the dike. He then went down in the bottom and flipped other half to the outside so he could reach that from on the dike to fill the spreader. I kept any rainfall all summer pumped off and we had a dry fall. Fields were right beside the lagoon. Had to haul in 500 yards of fill because they wanted a crown so water wouldn't pond on the finished project. Stripped all the top soil back before pushing dikes in. Replaced top soil and grew a great crop the first year. | |
