Peraonlly I would leave the liner if there is not a nutrient load in it, long as you get surface drainage what would it hurt?
If it was laid in properly, I'd think grass would struggle to be productive. Plastic clay, compacted to 98%, designed to not let water pass through. Doesn't sound like a good environment for roots.
