Faunsdale, AL | Depends on the regulator. Simplest are not adjustable, it’s just built so the voltage is close when you get the rpm/Hz right on 60. That’s the cheapest way to build one and voltage rises along with rpm. The problem is when tne load is high, voltage tends to sag even if engine can keep Hz/rpm close to 60.
Then there’s ones that are adjustable independent of Hz. They’re better at keeping voltage from sagging under load The most complicated ones allow you to select stable voltage no matter what the Hz does. This puts additional strain on the engine when a load is dropped on it. The “excursion” from normal voltage may be a little less severe but last longer because of the additional load on the engine. The other option is to allow the voltage to sag more, but the engine recover quicker so the excursion from normal is shorter.
