Subject: NAT Irrigation engine question

I have a propane Ford 300 on a gen set that runs a center pivot. It is set up, as all irrigation setups I have seen, as a straight drive shaft off of the clutch. The problem is to get the gen set to generate 480 volts, I have to run the engine at 2300 RPMs. This causes it to burn more propane than I would like. Has anyone attached a manual transmission to a irrigation engine in order to get RPMs to the drive shaft with less engine RPMs?
