I would start by connecting a small double acting cylinder to the valve and test it separately from the steering motor up front under the fuel tank. If you want to do it at the same time, you can hook two hoses from a SCV to the motor and steer the wheels back and forth with the lever on the dash. I have an old sprayer with some little cylinders about 2” diameter that I can grab one and the hoses that run to it.

Most of the old tractors have a splice in the two lines inside the right radiator screen. You’ll need a couple hoses with JIC ends and lay the cylinder on the ground and steer it back and forth. If it runs the cylinder just fine, then you know to work on the motor.

I’m betting it’s the motor, but worth testing to find out. If you have to get it hooked up and bled out and then let tractor sit overnight to duplicate his complaint, you’re still ahead. I rebuilt and adjusted valves in the valve on my old 3020 TWICE before I checked it before I put it back in the tractor. Then I resealed the steering motor pistons and fixed it. Mine would only steer to the right very slowly even after it had warmed up. Once the wheels got to the right lock it would steer both ways perfectly normal for a minute before it would be back to doing the same thing.

There’s two pistons with seals in both ends. Have to drop the front axle or at least the steering arm and quill have to come out and then you can remove a frame rail and pull the pistons from one side. Not a bad idea to replace the big seal in the quill while it’s out. The seals are around 60 years old now. Not too surprising that they have gotten to the end of their life.

Got a 6030 that does about the same thing but it doesn’t want to steer at all to start with. I’m thinking it’s just flow to build up pressure. Really should do more to diagnose it but it always comes to life and we go on about our day. Think I’ll start with changing the hydraulic filter. I replaced brakes several years ago, so suction screen should not be clogged. May be transmission pump is just worn and slow to pick up oil?
