Madison Co. Virginia | Keeping the rats and mice away is key. Lose the food source, and the snakes won't see much reason to be there either. Maybe a larger lawn, to move the rat-food-rich cornfield further from the crawlspace.
Personally, I'm the type who readily relocates black rat snakes to places where they're more needed. If there's any reason to suspect rodents, or particularly if there's reports of copperheads around that house, it gets priority if I need a place to go with a rat snake. The rat snakes are rumored to kill copperheads, but I haven't seen any evidence of that. I think the main benefit they provide is displacement; eating the food source before the copperheads can get to it. The rat snakes will mostly self-regulate to match the food source. | |
