Subject: Fair Payment for Rough Cut Lumber job?

Maryland
A friend owns a tree service and I hired him (charged and I paid as a regular customer) to cut down and remove a large maple tree.

I took the trunk to him and he used his sawmill to rough cut lumber for me. I asked him what I owed him and he said "it's not perfect, whatever you think it's worth".

He's hard working and has a young family, I don't want to short him but have no idea how much to give him...any thoughts on payment amount for his job cutting the trunk up into boards for me?

thanks.
