Iowa | Probably the biggest thing that government help is doing right now is risk mitigation. That guy farming 50k acres can sleep ok at night knowing that he can have his risk subsidized down to a reasonable level where a bank is comfortable with it.
We’re gonna go 1 of 2 ways (and maybe both at the same time). Option 1 is 1-2 guys farming a county -but we’ve been here before - as operations increase the level of concern for things like soil conservation decreases- it’s no longer “my farm” it’s just a rental car to make a $ off of. What is the public going to do when we see dust bowl events, or erosion just to make more money? Option 2 is smaller diversified farms similar to what we had 100 years ago. Seems far fetched, BUT that’s really what our end user wants. How many under 40 city people are buying things that say “organic, cage free, antibiotic free, pesticide free” —- a lot. There will be opertunity for those types of small/part time farms. One of the things government could do is provide support during those transition years to organic type production- these would be significantly more popular that our current government ag subsidy programs.
