I think the "farm problem" will eventually solve itself through attrition. The 800 acre good guy, nuclear farm family will migrate towards other employments and the 50,000 acre guy will absorb them and become +100,000 acres and at that point they won`t need or qualify for the farm programs. USDA FSA will basically give advice on chicken tractors and farmers markets.. not a lot in between. Thing is it`s a painful 5 years in the transition. No president or politician wants to be in charge during a "farm crisis" but things are so big these days, foreclosed machinery will be quietly hauled to consignment auctions 100 miles away, unlike the 1980s.

It`s impossible to balance the budget with career politicians elected to 2, 4 or 6 year terms. Problems that are rooted over 50 years can`t be uprooted in a single congressperson`s term. As it is "how do we cut spending?" just take farming for instance, someone always pokes their head up "How bout cutting farm subsidies????" fair enough, however every smart aleck bringing that up would scream bloody murder about having their ox gored: healthcare, college loans, museums, PBS, flower planting ECT ECT

And people can`t stand a little discomfort in exchange for some good at the end of the road. We see that with tariffs the bellyaching about having to pay a little more for American made that would result in people becoming more self sufficient and less dependent on the government as their jobs become living wage. They want the quick easy band aid and I don`t see that ever changing.
