Kind of to attach onto Green Acres, anytime we plant into tall covers, may as well forget the pre. Since we’ve been pushing bean planting early and into short covers, we have seen residuals help. Just our thoughts!
I typically try to start planting around April 5 and I’ve seen it turn off wet. The covers will be killed but some native grasses try coming through, along with early pig weed. There’s some places I don’t have the best stand of cover crop and two farms, that’s just the native cool season grasses and weeds. I’m finding that, in my area, I’m getting better weed control if I don’t plant quite as early and that single post pass is sometimes sufficient. There seems to be nothing that works exactly the same every year. This part of the state, where I believe every weed in the country thrives and the weather is all over the place, it’s a real chess match. On top of that I’ve got alot of cotton grown very close, so you know what that means. I’ve been farming for most of my life and I’ve noticed that applying what I’ve learned sometimes don’t amount to much, when it comes to weed control. Ever get that feeling?
