NW IL | Top nitrogen for any legume will be just before flowering. After it starts to flower it pulls nitrogen to put into reproductive energy.
Around here that could be 2-4 weeks after the first planters roll depending on spring temps. shooting from the hip I'd say flowering might start after about 2 weeks of ground temps at 50F??
Short version, if you are going for top nitrogen you'll end up delaying corn planting by a bit, but usually not too extreme. Here, planters might roll around April 20. First cutting dairy hay is usually May 10-15.
Termination can be done any number of ways, tillage or chem. Might depend how old the field is and how thick the stand.
We terminate buy tillage. Usually 2 passes with an RMX340 disk, sometimes a 3rd for a better finish. This is usually 3-4 year old stands. We don't get too worked up over a few plants that survive, but I know some people like to see a completely black field before the planter rolls. | |
