From the pictures, it would appear that there were a combination of stressors. The frost should have impacted the entire field evenly however there's more to it than just frost. From what I can tell, seed quality may have been an issue but the following is most likely.
Early-season stress stacking:
Variable planting depth
Cold, possibly wet soils
Uneven emergence
Followed by a frost event that exposed underlying weakness
