SW WI | I would bet years ago experts weighed the advantage of taking Cuba. USA has a naval base there. Mabey the minds at the time rather have the base and not the Island and its burden? Who knows.
Passed in 1901, the Platt Amendment was a U.S. law restricting Cuban sovereignty, forcing the new nation to allow U.S. intervention to protect American interests and providing land for naval bases, including Guantanamo Bay. It served as a condition for the withdrawal of U.S. troops, essentially making Cuba a U.S. protectorate until most of its provisions were repealed in 1934.
The Platt Amendment remained in force until 1934 when both sides agreed to cancel the treaties that enforced it.
Going back in those day immigrants were mostly white and USA still had Jim Crow laws, whether racism had anything to do with keeping Cuba. Who knows.
Make it the 51st state give them citizenship and passports. | |
