First you consult and listen to your top brass before even going to war to identify the risks. If you decide to attack ,next you consult with your allies and build a coalition and present an overwhelming military presense in the Straits to prevent merchant ships being picked off like sitting ducks. Instead of asking them after the fact when a mess is created and they tell you , sorry no.

Again I think Trump miscalculated the risks on this one. Doubt Iran fades quickly into the night. This one will cost us biggly.
Especially if more oil and gas facilities are destroyed
So, how would that have worked out for this overwhelming presence when every single Iranian missle was available to target these military assets. Thereād have been one heck of a bunch of smoldering ships floating around. And plenty more sunk. And how many sailors and servicemen would have died utilizing that brilliant strategy?
