| Prednisone is the drug of last choice. Basically a wonder drug for most people and animals. Biggest side affects is water retention, inability to sleep, increased appetite, will cause immediate weight gain. Also the biggest side affect one is mood swings. It can cause you to be fine one minute and fly off the handle the next.
Its a great drug for quick relief of inflammation, also in high doses it can force a reset of functions in your system. I suffer from a blood disorder, of the treatments offered I figured I would take the least invasive choice of a high dose of prednisone for a week's time. However doctor cold turkeyed me off it. I felt it almost killed me I thought I was having a heart attack, I was over 100 miles from any other drugs to help get relief from the side effects of the high dose of prednisone.
I was able to get ahold of emergency room doc on phone, told me pretty sure it was caused by cold turkey off it. He was pissed the oncologist that prescribed the drug to me never followed through with prescribing the drug omeprazole to counter act side effects. That was one of the worst 12-15 hours I ever went through in my life. Hindsight I should have sent someone to town to get that drug to help me.
The drug did reset my blood numbers in three days, however all the other side effects almost killed me. It caused a pinched nerve in my neck to be futher pinched as I had herniated disc's in my neck. I then had to have two disc's removed and neck fused. But in order to get blood numbers up to operate on neck, I had to go on chemo treatments so they could operate safely. It was a summer of hell for me. Then four years later blood numbers dropped again had to do chemo again.
After all that mess blood has been good for 13 years. I honestly figured the prednisone would have worked, if I could have been tapered off. Even my pharmacist questioned the prescribed dose when oder came in for it. But it was doctor's order, so I took it. My veterinarian even told me at the time it was the drug of last choice, nothing else works put you on it.
It helps a lot of ailments, just be warned you need to take omeprazole to counter side effects when coming off it. Also very seriously put a little distance between you and people that cause you grit your teeth because you will go off on them. However you will have the cleanest house or office because you won't be able to sleep, so you'll be cleaning in the middle of the night. LOL
I've taken lower doses of prednisone since then for respiratory issues taken measures to counter side effects and I've been fine. | |
