Minnesota | I depends of course on the reason that you are taking it, your dosage, and the duration that you take it.
Long-term high doses of corticosteroids will cause Cushing syndrome (or similar symptoms). This can also be caused by pituitary or adrenal tumors that can cause a person to produce excessive levels of corticosteroids. You're probably not going to see much of these symptoms at a low dose for a short duration.
However, if someone takes prednisone (or other corticosteroids) for a while, it will suppress natural steroid production from the adrenal glands. So, if you suddenly stop taking steroid medications after you have done so for a while, there will be no natural production and it can lead to adrenal insufficiency...which is bad. That's why you have to taper down the dosage --to give your body time to ramp back up natural production.
The best thing you can do is to talk to your doctor about your concerns and what is appropriate for your own healthcare. | |
