.Is it because the weather is sensationalized so much by the media?

IMO, yes.
When I was 12, the tornado went through Charles City, Iowa. I was there when it hit. I had nightmares for a few years, but got over it. Now, I go outside and sit watching the storms. When our daughters were little, I'd take them outside with me and we'd sit and watch until it either rained or lightning got sharp. They slept through thunderstorms. They've done the same with their kids, and they know it's just weather doing weather stuff.
Same with winter weather. Everyone is afraid of a couple inches of snow, and most don't know how to drive in it any more. This morning at 7:30 I went to Mason City for doctor appointments. Blizzard warnings everywhere. Visibility was over a mile. Of course there were the idiots in the ditch from the slippery roads from yesterday. I was able to run 60, but slowed to 45, just because I had plenty of time since I left early.
Worst thing was the clinic employees that lived inside Mason City and called in because of the snow. They lived in town! (this from one of the ladies that checked me in) The ones that were there were busy answering calls to cancel appointments.
Seems that a large segment of our population has the survival skills of a potato.
