Stalks are going to be much harder on your baler then they are on the rake. You won't see any additional wear on that rake unless you exclusively use it for stalks in a custom sort of operation where acres and acres and acres are going through it, and even then it'll be minimal. Going this route will cut down on the wear seen at the baler as root balls will be much less likely to be pulled into the windrow, the majority of the material will be husks and leaves rather then the harder, stiffer stalk portion that'll stay attached to the ground, and you won't be sucking dirt up off the ground like with a flail chopper (used to be the preferred method around here).

As for harvesting differently on fields we may bale, we don't. Just continue to keep the header raised as high as we can and still get all the ears.
