Subject: RE: People That Are Scared Of Storms

SW OH
I vividly remember when the tornados rolled through here in 1974. We had a herdsman that live on the other place a mile to the south that was an avid ham radio enthusiast. I remember my dad telling him "let me know if you hear anything".

I was 8 years old. I remember standing in the yard while the weather was bad. Looking up at the tail of a tornado dancing in the air. I was clamped onto dad's leg for dear life. He said "don't worry, it's in the air, it won't hurt us". It must have gotten lower as it passed over the neighbors behind us. It removed 30 feet off of the top of their silos.

Our local town just a few miles south was hit pretty hard. Warren and main Street had hundreds of large trees blown down across the streets. Several large buildings were flattened. Town was basically shut down for a week due to impassable roads. Xenia, 20 miles to the north was almost erased from the map.

As an adult I've seen 2 tornados from a mile or so away. 1 while I was driving a tractor home from a farm 30 miles away. I didn't think much of it. It's over there, I'm over here. I went to a party back around 2000 in a newer subdivision. The hostess was a coworker of my girlfriend showing off her new house. A tornado watch was issued right after we got there. These new house owners freaked out and made everyone there hide in the corners of the basement. They even flipped the main breaker off in the breaker box. There were a dozen small kids screaming bloody murder, certain they were going to die. The hostess insisted on silence so they could hear the news on their portable radio. The weather Nazi was giving weather reports by the square yard. After 5 minutes I spoke up and said "yall are nuts, I'm leaving"! They actually tried to restrain us. When we finally got outside there was 20 MPH winds and a light sprinkle. The next week while my girlfriend was a work the hostess of the party told her she didn't think they should be friends because of my unrulyness against authority. My girlfriend told her that was fine with her. I'm amazed how many people get sucked in by the weather Nazis like Tim Hedrick. Me scared of storms? No, just concerned about the damage. I respect the weather and I love a good lightening show.
