To me that's crying wolf and now when a tornado warning is issued I'll check the radar and usually ignore the warning. When I was a kid of they issued a tornado warning it meant there was an actual tornado and you got your a$$ to the basement! It helps having a phone too that you can pull up a live radar anytime anywhere.
The actual written warnings issued by NWS provide clarity on that. They have language such as the source being "radar-indicated rotation", "confirmed by law enforcement/trained spotters", and then the rare "Particularly Dangerous Situation" and "Emergency" warnings. Agreed about sometimes crying wolf, but on the flip side being in Greensburg shortly after they were leveled was certainly a sobering thing to see.
We've all come to take for granted just how much all of this has improved since NEXRAD radars and good internet access almost everywhere. |
