Subject: People That Are Scared Of Storms

WCMO-SWMO Area
I'll admit that as a kid I was scared of storms...As I became a teenager I became interested in the weather and got to where storms didnt bother me much..I respect them but dont fear them..Being retired I often sit out on the porch and watch storms which is the reason for my name on here..However,I'm starting to think that I am in the minority...It seems like more and more people in my area are absolutely terrified every time that a severe storm or tornado watch is issued..They think a mile wide tornado is going to hit them dead center and wipe them off the face of the earth...Is it because the weather is sensationalized so much by the media? The May 2011 Joplin,MO tornado with 158 deaths may be one big reason so many in my area are scared of storms...I cant say that I blame them..It was terrible to see..

A close family member (not my wife) cant sleep a wink in the Spring and is often exhausted from it..They think that every storm will bring death and destruction..I tell them that you are far more likely to fall in the tub and die than die from a tornado..They just dont believe me..They are amazed that I'm in bed every night by 10 PM no matter what the weather is doing..We have no basement so our interior bedroom closet would be our best choice for shelter....We have never had to use it but have came close a time or two..In the mid 1970's we lost a machine shed from high wind but it never hurt the house..It blew 60-80 mph for 30 minutes with 3 inches of rain falling...It was a scary storm that hit at 6 in the evening..I have never seen a tornado and the closest a tornado has ever been is 7 miles away from our farm...

I see comments all over Facebook where lots in my area stay up most of the night when its stormy...One local meteorologist has to give them the all clear before they can to go to bed...Maybe I'm the crazy one for going to bed before the storms even hit?
