Planning on talking to dad about farm succession in the coming months. Based on your experience, what questions are reasonable to ask and expect answers to? A little background, I’m in mid 30’s and been on the farm my whole life. We farm about the same amount of acres but don’t share any land. I own about 40% of the equipment some of which is shared between the two of us. At this point we haven’t had any discussions about the future. TIA
How old is he? What’s your mom’s involvement? Are you married?
You already own equipment together and have not talked about the future? How does that happen?
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think there are many questions that are unreasonable to ask. Be tactful, keep expectations realistic, but if you’re going to have a productive discussion, there needs to be some hard questions asked and answered. Too many guys just have another “don’t worry, we’ll figure it out later” meeting and pretty soon the decades have rolled by until it’s too late.
